The institute has a competence platform Computer Vision Based on Computational Intelligence and focuses on two research areas of the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences: Adaptive Mechanisms in Digital Image Processing and Fuzzy-Technologies (Computational Intelligence). The institute is linked with other experts in applied science universities within the country through the research associations Forschungsverbund "Neuronale Fuzzy-Logik" (NFL)  and Forschungsverbund Technische Bildverarbeitung in verteilten Systemen.
